Why Women Should Lift Weights - Aethix Podcast with Katya Gorbacheva

Katya Gorbacheva is not just a powerlifter; she is one of the strongest vegan women in the world. As a nationally qualified USAPL powerhouse, she is part of the vegan strong teams like PlantBuilt. In this interview, Ryan explores her inspiring journey, the challenges she faced, and the insights she shares about strength training and a plant-based lifestyle.

From Bodybuilding to Powerlifting

Katya’s fitness journey began in bodybuilding. She competed and won Bikini Novice in Atlantic Coast Classic in 2019 and Bikini Open and 2nd Place Overall in OCB Colonial Open in 2019. However Katya found that being stage lean didn't bring her happiness. Missing periods due to being lean and feeling too hungry and weak to even go up the stairs is how bodybuilders feel when stage lean. That didn't resonate with being a strong athlete according to Katya, and many who've tried the sport of bodybuilding agree with her.

After dealing with the disappointments of canceled competitions during the COVID-19 pandemic, Katya decided to focus on powerlifting. The foundation of her lifting routine was "the big three" anyways: squat, bench and deadlift. Katya learned the importance of strength over appearance and discovered that lifting heavy was her true passion.

Katya emphasizes that strength training is for everyone, especially women. She encourages women not to shy away from lifting heavy weights, as it can lead to better healthy bones, self empowerment and confidence. The improved looks come as a pleasant side effect.

Discovering Veganism

Katya went vegan after a troubling blood test showed that she was on the verge of heart disease, despite looking fit. Intrigued by how diet could impact health, she slowly transitioned to a plant-based diet. She replaced dairy and meat with vegan options, like tofu and plant-based proteins.

Her decision to go vegan was gradual, allowing her body to adjust. Within eight weeks, her blood work improved dramatically. She advocates for others to try a plant-based diet, stressing that you can be both strong and healthy without animal products and playing moral gymnastics. If you think killing is wrong -stop paying other people to kill animals for you.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many, Katya faced struggles with food and self-image. She opened up about her battles with yo-yo dieting and orthorexia. Finding a healthy relationship with food took time and effort.

Throughout her journey, she learned the importance of intrinsic motivation. She encourages people to focus on lifting and enjoying their bodies rather than obsessing over weight loss or societal standards. Focusing on strength can lead to better mental health and overall well-being.

Helping Others

Katya shares her knowledge through coaching and resources like her recently published book, The Vegan Powerlifting Starter Guide. This guide is aimed at helping people improve their body composition through strength training.

She emphasizes that coaching should be personalized. Strong athletes build their programs based on their unique needs and goals. Katya's approach encourages clients to prioritize health and strength over aesthetics.

The Future of Strength Training

As powerlifting gains popularity among women, Katya hopes that the stigma around heavy lifting will eventually fade. She believes that focusing on personal health and goals will inspire others to follow a similar path.

Combining compassion with strength is a key aspect of Katya's philosophy. She teaches that anyone can achieve their health and fitness goals through dedication and support.

Katya Gorbacheva is leading the charge for strong vegan women. Her journey from bodybuilding to powerlifting is a testament to the strength found in plant-based living. Through her experiences, she inspires others to embrace their own strength and challenges the stereotypes surrounding fitness and veganism.

If you're looking for motivation or guidance on your own fitness journey, consider exploring her resources. Strength and wellness are attainable for everyone, regardless of your dietary choices.
